Dear APA Missouri Members,
First, I’d like to introduce myself to all of you. I am Hilary Perkins, AICP, and your new APA Missouri President. I took over as President from Shannon Jaax, AICP in January and am excited to serve as your Chapter President for the next two years. I currently work for the City of Maryland Heights as a planner and project manager.
Second, I wanted to personally inform our membership of upcoming dues changes. As you may remember, APA National is requiring all APA Chapters move to a percentage based dues structure. Back in October, many of you participated in a survey regarding membership dues structure changes. Past President Jaax sent an email in November providing the results of that survey and the APA Missouri board discussed those results at the December board meeting. After additional discussion at the February board retreat, we have decided to move forward with a 25% dues structure to be implemented in January 2018. The table below displays what that dues increase will mean based on your salary.
Dues at 25%
Less than $42,000
$42,000 – $49,999
$50,000 – $59,999
$60,000 – $69,999
$70,000 – $79,999
As a reminder, if Chapter dues had kept up with inflation, regular membership dues would be $59.58 in 2017 dollars. It should also be noted that Chapter dues would not change for Planning Board, Retired, Planning Faculty and Life Members. Student rates are free.
With the dues increase, the Chapter aims to provide additional dollars to the three sections so that services and resources can be provided most efficiently at the local level. Sections will receive increased rebate amounts from $5/member to $15/member. Additionally, as you may recall from the October Annual Meeting, the Chapter would like to increase activities and programs such as: expanded CM opportunities - especially to members not served by a section, expanding information sharing on legislative issues (stay tuned for more information on this), and added training opportunities for commissioners. We also hope to continue our numerous communications channels with members, the Planning Webcast Consortium, APA Live Online events, the Great Places in Missouri program, and support of planning students throughout the state.
If you have questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me directly, or reach out to your section representative. Watch the APA Monthly Newsletter for more information on Chapter news.

The American Planning Association Missouri Chapter (APA Missouri) is the recipient of a $60,000 grant through the American Planning Association’s Planners4Health initiative. The initiative’s goal is to create stronger, healthier communities. This grant allows for a continued partnership between Trailnet and APA Missouri to focus on educating planners and public health professionals on the health impacts of street design.
This six-month initiative, sponsored by the American Planning Association (APA), will ensure planners and public health professionals have access to information and resources that encourage communities to plan and create policies for healthy living. Trailnet and APA Missouri will use the grant to broadly share knowledge and resources on building coalitions with public health professionals, and to integrate public health into local and regional planning practices. The focus of the project, in partnership with the Missouri Council of Activity and Nutrition, is to share lessons learned from the Plan4Health project throughout the state through the hosting of three pop-up traffic calming demonstrations. These events will be in the metro St. Louis area, metro Kansas City, and Springfield. Stay tuned for exact dates and locations!
Trailnet and APA Missouri have been working together since February 2015 on the Plan4Health initiative, which involved pop-up traffic calming demonstrations throughout the city of St. Louis. The project received positive reviews from community members, city staff, and elected officials within St. Louis, attracting national and international attention.
There will be a webinar covering tactical urbanism and success stories from traffic calming demonstrations in the St. Louis area on March 2 at 10 a.m. All are welcome to participate. Register here.
The Kansas City Section of the American Planning Association (KC APA), in partnership with the planning programs at UMKC, KU, K-State and Missouri State, is hosting the 6th Annual Internship Fair to connect local planning students with planning practitioners and agencies who are interested in offering internship opportunities in summer 2017.
Internships may be both paid or unpaid, and will provide a meaningful internship of 20-40 hrs/wk so that planning students gain valuable work experience, develop strong relationships with planning professionals and mentors, and contribute to organizations.
The internship fair will be held at UMKC, Katz Hall on Friday, April 7, 2017 from 1:00-4:00pm.
Questions should be directed to Shannon Jaax.
